Mapping the role of vaccines in combating AMR in the WHO African region: a scoping review and implications for research and policy

A scoping review of 10 studies on vaccines’ role in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the WHO African Region identified critical knowledge gaps and proposed priority areas for research and policy interventions. The review included studies on pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, influenza, rotavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, tuberculosis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Five studies estimated the potential impact of vaccines on AMR, focusing on reductions in AMR burden, disease incidence, deaths due to resistant pathogens, and antibiotic consumption. The review suggests more country-level studies, clinical trials, and strengthening AMR surveillance systems.
